Additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine after initial vaccination for the elderly and dialysis patients

Following the recommendations of the High Council for Infectious Diseases (Conseil supérieur des maladies infectieuses – CSMI) of 7 September 2021, a third "booster" dose of coronavirus vaccination may be administered

  • to people aged 75+ living independently at home
  • to elderly people in accommodation facilities without age limit
  • to people on dialysis

This additional dose will be provided after a complete initial vaccination (either 2 doses of an mRNA vaccine, or 2 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine, or 1 dose of Janssen vaccine, or 1 dose of AstraZeneca vaccine followed by an mRNA dose - mix & match).

It should be recalled that immunocompromised persons can already benefit from the 3rd dose of vaccination as per the CSMI recommendation of 2 July 2021.

The additional dose of an mRNA vaccine should be administered at least 6 months after a 2-dose vaccination or 2 months after vaccination with Janssen vaccine. An interval of 2 weeks is to be observed before or after another vaccine administration (e.g. flu).

Booking an appointment

The first invitations for the 3rd dose of coronavirus vaccination will be sent out by the end of this week (17 September), with further invitations to be sent out in successive instalments.

Residents of accommodation facilities for the elderly will be vaccinated through the mobile vaccination teams of the National Health Directorate.

Based on their age, those concerned will receive an invitation from the Luxembourg Government by post, with details on how to make an appointment at the Victor Hugo vaccination centre (registration via myguichet.lu). It should be noted that anyone who meets the criteria (6 months after the 2nd dose, respectively after the 1st dose if tested positive or 2 months after a vaccination with Janssen) can also make an appointment with their physician to be vaccinated. The list of physicians participating in the vaccination campaign is available at impfen.lu.

Personalised assistance is also offered through a hotline specifically set up for this purpose under the number (+352) 247-65533.
