Accessible elections for all: tools for municipalities

For people with disabilities, participation in political and public life can be fraught with obstacles. How to get to the polling station if you are in a wheelchair? How do you fill in a ballot paper if you are visually impaired? How to understand the voting system if you have mental conditions?

The non-profit organisation "Ligue HMC", the service "KLARO" under the non-profit organisation "APEMH", the non-profit organisation "Info-Handicap", the Institute for the Visually Impaired, the Foundation "Zentrum fir politesch Bildung" and the Ministry of Family Affairs, and the Ministry for Family, Integration and the Greater Region propose to set up adapted means for people with a mental disability, as well as for people with limited reading and writing skills, in order to ensure participation in elections without the help of a third party.

The "Accessibility of Polling Stations" brochure

Access to polling stations for people with reduced mobility should be ensured. The brochure "Accessibility of Polling Stations" contains further information and recommendations on this subject. The brochure is only available in digital form.

The "Walschabloun" tactile stencil

Many people with visual impairments vote by post. The identification of the candidates is not obvious and the help of a third person is therefore necessary. The "Walschabloun", a tactile stencil, makes voting accessible and independent: The voter can therefore choose the candidates or the list independently.

An easy-to-read version of the invitation and voter instructions - for each constituency and for postal voting.

Indeed, accessibility of elections is only guaranteed if all official documents distributed are understandable and accessible to all voters. Writing the documents in easy-to-read language facilitates access to information for a wider population in an "inclusive" way.
