    Our project aims to establish an inventory of the historical discriminatory images that continue to distort the way people of African descent are viewed in Luxembourg on a daily basis, and to suggest avenues for reflection with a view to a more respectful treatment of diversity in the public sphere

    Project title: A fleur de peau : being a person of colour in Luxembourg

    Project duration: 15 April 2020 to 15 January 2021

    Project description:

    The project aims to establish an inventory of the representation of Afro-descendants in Luxembourgish public spaces (media, advertising, museums), in order to understand whether a skin colour other than white carries discriminatory notions. The project therefore attempts to study the historical thread of the different representations, to understand the contexts and the goals in which they were elaborated and to decipher their discriminatory scope. In particular, the project aims to analyse whether these representations restrict Afro-descendants to certain sectors (e.g. sports, entertainment, fashion, etc.) and deny them visibility in other sectors (research, teaching, etc.)

    The project will be mainly supported by the CDMH/Finkapé partnership. However, it is based on a very broad working group including representatives from associations, academia (University of Luxembourg, University of Lorraine, etc.), culture (museums, such as MNHA, City Museum) and the media (Forum, Radio 100.7, etc.).

    Project objectives:

  • Establishing a historical inventory of locally present images (press, advertising, arts, permanent museum exhibitions, temporary exhibitions ...) and an inventory of the presence of Afro-descendants.
  • Organisation and coordination of a multidisciplinary reflection workshop. The workshop will bring together the beneficiaries of the project (represented by the working group set up with Finkapé) in association with the target population of producers, receivers and multipliers of such images (media, advertisers, museums).
  • Organisation of a public round table presentation of the results with the concerned populations and representatives of image producers (such as press council, Design Luxembourg, interested ministries).
  • Target population:
  • Afro-descendant people in Luxembourg. The project transcends gender, age groups and status. Furthermore, the project addresses the entire Luxembourgish society.
  • Achieved results:
  • The Centre de Documentation sur les Migrations Humaines (CDMH), in partnership with Finkapé asbl, organised two videoconferences on the issue of racialisation and otherness in the media and in museum works. 180 people from various backgrounds (media, press, museums, members of associations or cooperation NGOs, individuals interested in the subject, etc.) took part in these videoconferences.
  • In particular, the project managers carried out a socio-historical inventory of colonial images and the presence of populations originating from the African continent in Luxembourgish historiography. The CDMH librarian registered all the resources mobilised in the common catalogue of Luxembourg libraries. Consequently, they are now available to the interested public.

Analysis of the location choices of immigrants

    The LISER research project aims to identify the push and pull factors that influence the inflows and outflows of persons of foreign origin and Luxembourg nationals at the municipal level. It also aims to find out where new immigrants tend to settle within Luxembourg

    Project title: Analysis of the location choices of immigrants in Luxembourg

    Project duration: 1 July 2020 to 31 March 2021

    Project description:

    The aim of the project is to analyse, at the municipal level, the attracting and repelling factors that influence immigration and emigration movements in Luxembourg. The project has four objectives:

    1. To make an inventory of population movements in Luxembourg's municipalities (inflows and outflows).

    2. To better identify the factors that influenced the location choices of immigrants/migrants in Luxembourg before 2011 (the year of the last census) compared to the movements of the Luxembourg population. The research project will investigate the decision-making factors - in particular, the role played by the level of education, family composition or country of origin.

    3. To better assess whether the availability of data plays a greater role in the accuracy of the results.

    4. Systematically analyse the push/pull factors in immigrants' location choices.

    Project objectives:

    The results of this research project will be compiled in a report that lists a number of research factors hat would enable a better understanding of the impact of integration policies and actions taken by local authorities on location choice and the mechanisms through which this influence occurs. The report contains

    (1) descriptive statistics per municipality on observed in-migration and out-migration between 2005 and 2011,

    (2) an empirical analysis of the reasons for these movements based on individual data from the 2011 census and municipality-specific characteristics,

    (3) an (empirical) assessment of what role data wealth plays in the individual characteristics and

    (4) an exploratory analysis of data from the national register for annual monitoring of in-migration and out-migration and their determinants.

    Target population:

    The project investigates the location choices of new immigrants (who arrived between 2005 and 2011 or between 2010 and 2011) and the relocation decisions of former immigrants and adult refugees from all over the world.

    Achieved results:

  • Drafting of a report that includes (1) descriptive statistics by municipality on in-migration/out-migration observed between 2005 and 2011, (2) an empirical analysis of the determinants of these movements, (3) an assessment of the role that data richness plays in individual characteristics, and (4) an exploratory analysis of national registry data for the annual monitoring of in-migration/out-migration and its determinants.
  • The analyses highlight the differences in location dynamics between natives and immigrants. Differences with newcomers were also examined.

Collectif au Carré

    For more than a year we have been developing the project "Collectif au Carré", which was based on a meeting with the French association Citémômes. We were inspired by the idea of creating a huge textile work using simple knitted squares. This idea embodies the values that our association has defended since its beginnings: Intergeneration stands for interaction between older and younger people. It stands at the same time for an interplay between digital culture and traditional practices. But we also stand for interculturalism: an interplay of migration, tradition and languages - and above all, we want to create something together

    Project title: Collectif au Carré

    Project duration: 1 September 2020 to 31 May 2021

    Project description:

    Mamie et Moi asbl wants to realise an integration project to show that art and textiles are universal and touch everyone through their sensitive aspects and presence in our daily lives. The project consists of reproducing a Luxembourgish impressionist painting from the Villa Vauban collection in XXL format. All the volunteers from their homes or during participatory workshops will make this huge painting from 5,000 hand-knitted squares. In general, the project aims:

  • To familiarise as many people as possible with Luxembourgish art and culture through a playful "sensory" approach.
  • To promote encounters and connections between people of different origins and ages within the framework of a joint project.
  • To facilitate integration through community: the project can only be realised if "we do something together" in mutual friendliness and respect.
  • To promote oral language practice in Luxembourgish, French and German in shared sociable moments.
  • To promote a "Stress-free" inclusion: Participation in the project requires no prior knowledge.
  • To improve the skills and knowledge of senior citizens by teaching them simple craft skills (knitting).
  • Project objectives:
  • 500 people of all nationalities and ages participate in the realisation of the first knitting table in Luxembourg.
  • Creating surveys and a project guestbook to evaluate the concept.
  • Target population:
  • Around 100 women who are already part of the Mamie et Moi knitters community, residents of Luxembourg, EU/third country nationals, in the age group between 35 and 88.
  • Around 400 women and men participating in the workshops (virtual and face-to-face) and through our "collecting box" system: Luxembourg residents and EU citizens, children and people with international protection status.
  • Achieved results:
  • Participation rate in the virtual and participatory live workshops: 604 participants with 17 nationalities represented, of which 20% were children under the age of 15 and 15% seniors over 60.
  • The progress rate of the "square counter" shows the enthusiasm with which the project was received: 31,052 squares were collected (6 times more than the original target of 5,000 squares).
  • Creation of a "guest book" on the project website and a wall for collecting dedications during the exhibition.
  • Reproduction in knitted squares of the painting "La petite histoire" by the Luxembourg painter Corneille Lentz in the Lëtzebuerg City Museum.

    Our project will give authors of hateful comments the opportunity to realize the consequences of their actions by inviting them to reflect on them. We will also make them aware of issues such as hate speech, conscious communication and discrimination. Together we will explore the legal boundaries of freedom of expression and also give them the opportunity to put themselves in the shoes of the victims they have attacked

    Project title: Dialog statt Hass / dialogue instead of hate

    Project duration: 1 April 2020 to 31 December 2020

    Project description: Incitement to hatred, commonly known in English as 'hate speech', has become a major problem in today's society. Debates about political and social news are increasingly conducted on the internet and social networks. These exchanges and discussions are polarising, but should remain objective and not increase hostility. Although freedom of expression is a fundamental value of our societies, it is regularly overstepped. The trend is clearly on the rise: in Luxembourg, the police investigated more than 50 cases in this context in 2019, compared to 20 cases in 2018. According to Luxembourgish criminal law, "hate speech" is punishable when the following elements come together:

  • It must be an incitement to hatred or violence concerning a private or legal person, a group or a community that is discriminated against because of one or more characteristics.
  • This incitement to hatred or violence must be concretised in words, texts, etc.

This project is based on an Austrian programme of the non-profit organisation "Neustart", which has developed a suitable intervention as a rational and socially constructive response to this problem

Project objectives:

  • The aim of the project is to counteract a deeper division of society and to contribute to a stronger integration of the different social groups.
  • Design and implementation of a pilot phase based on the Austrian model: The idea is to add a suspended sentence to an offender's prison sentence - or to replace it with a suspended sentence.

Target population:

Anyone who, from the point of view of the judicial authorities and/or other authorities, has attracted attention through publications deemed to be "incitement to hatred".

Project title: Designing Futures: Can social companies change the future of refugees and migrants?

Project duration: 1 April 2020 - 31 December 2020

Project description:
The project aims to address the link between social businesses and the integration of refugees and migrants. It aims to mobilise, activate and federate different actors and target audiences (social enterprises and organisations, public institutions; applicants for international protection and beneficiaries of international protection) around the topic of social economy at a national and international level through the organisation of a conference and a series of participatory workshops based on the design thinking methodology. The topics that will be discussed during these three events are:

  • Social businesses as employers: Refugees are often beneficiaries rather than actors. To what extent are refugees involved in project development and management of social businesses?
  • Social businesses - refugees as entrepreneurs: Is setting up a social business to solve problems oneself a good option for refugees? What possibilities, social entrepreneurship programmes exist to promote the creation of social businesses, including entrepreneurship training, coaching and mentoring, role models, microfinance, social grants, business counselling and the creation of business networks?
  • Social businesses as social innovators: Social innovation can lead to new types of civic engagement, new forms of entrepreneurship, new possibilities of communication and organisation.

Project objectives:

Series of three participatory workshops based on design thinking followed by a conference on the opportunities of social entrepreneurship for refugees.

Target population:

  • +/- 100 people (men/women; adults, all statuses) who will participate in the workshops.
  • Organisations and social businesses.
  • Public institutions.
  • Project leaders.

Achieved results:

  • Three digital co-creation workshops with experts in social entrepreneurship and in the field of entrepreneurship support for refugees and migrants.
  • Creation of a collection of international best practices and questions from the workshops.
  • The exchanges have shown that the obstacles faced by refugees in the entrepreneurial journey are very similar between countries, especially at European level.

    Our project aims to help young people create their sense of belonging in a country made up of many different communities. The aim is to help them to feel like "the guys from Ettelbruck" or "the guys from Mamer" or "the guys from Luxembourg City" and not only like Luxembourgers, foreigners, refugees

    Project title: Playing the connection, integration programme between young refugees, migrants and Luxembourgers through sport and art

    Project duration: 15 September 2020 to 31 July 2021 

    Project description:

    The project aims to create an exchange between young refugees, migrants of all nationalities and Luxembourg citizens, with a special focus on vulnerable groups. It also aims to raise awareness on integration in Luxembourgish society. The main tools to achieve these objectives are sport, photography, art, video production and the use of digital platforms.

    Project objectives

  • Establishing a network of school-age youth (12-19 years old) from different countries (refugees, Luxembourgers, migrants) who support each other by exchanging information and sharing experiences.
  • Creating of a football tournament and races.
  • Producing a video and photographic report on the stories of the young participants in the sports activities.
  • Creating a space on a digital platform and social networks where young people can exchange information about the project activities and stay in touch at the end of the initiative.
  • Facilitating artistic collaborations and cultural visits.
  • Raising awareness on integration among the inhabitants of the municipalities through the screening of the report, the photo exhibition and the sharing of the evaluation results.

Target population:

  • Approximately 80 young people (refugees, school students).
  • Secondary schools targeted Lycée Josy Barthel in Mamer, International School of Luxembourg, European School Luxembourg 1, technical high school in Ettelbruck and Nordstadjugend, as well as three refugee hostels, two run by Caritas (Foyer Saint Antoine, Foyer d'Ettelbruck) and one by the Red Cross (Foyer de Soleuvre).

Achieved results:

  • Two friendly football matches were played between young refugees and students from the European School.
  • A photography and video workshop was organised to produce a photo and video report on the project's activities.
  • The 11 autobiographical writing workshop addressed, among others, the following topics: "The story of my first name", "My motivation and involvement in this project" and "Sharing".
  • Four cultural visits were organised to allow young refugees and migrants to discover Luxembourg, its history and its cultural wealth.

Social capital in the integration of young adults

    The project focuses on the importance of social ties in the integration process of young migrants from third countries in Luxembourg. The analysis of the role of these ties in the integration of young migrants is important because youth is a formative period when social identities and feelings of belonging are developed. The aim is to improve the integration processes of young migrants in Luxembourg by offering them direct benefits and supporting their empowerment. The overall objective of the study is to understand, investigate, explain and scientifically formulate the role of social capital in the integration of young migrants living in Luxembourg

    Project title: Social capital in the integration of young adults with a migrant background in Luxembourg - Theory and practice  

    Project duration: 1 July 2020 to 31 March 2021

    Project description:

    The project focuses on the importance of social ties in the integration of young migrants from third countries living in Luxembourg. The analysis of the role of these ties in the integration of young migrants is important, as the period of youth is a formative period when social identities and feelings of belonging are developed. The overall aim of the study is to understand, investigate, explain and scientifically formulate the role of social capital in the integration of young migrants living in Luxembourg. It aims to provide answers to the following questions:

  • What social relations do young migrants rely on to engage in Luxembourgish society (e.g. types of bonding and bridging social capital)?
  • Which activities support or hinder social relations during the integration process in Luxembourg?

    Project objectives:

  • Biographical interviews with 1) young migrants (panel of 10-15 people) in three main geographical areas: the Centre, the South and the North of the country and 2) national actors (panel of 5-10 people), as well as municipal actors involved in youth integration and migration policies.
  • Elaboration of a Policy Brief: "Social capital: facilitators and barriers to the integration of young migrants in Luxembourg".  The results of the Policy Brief will be presented at colloquia at the University and disseminated by national and municipal youth/migration organisations

Target population:

  • Nuclear audience: 50 - 100 young adult migrants (female/male) between 18 and 29 years old from third countries living in Luxembourg under different residence permit conditions.
  • Broader audience: 1,000 - 3,000 government officials, members of non-governmental organisations, members of municipalities, Luxembourgish society (women and men) between 15-80 years old, Luxembourgish citizens, EU citizens and third country nationals.

Achieved results:

  • Completion of an analysis of secondary quantitative data concerning socio-economic participation, education and languages, housing, acquisition of nationality, civic and political participation and ethno-racial discrimination of young third-country migrants;
  • 9 interviews were conducted with representatives of organisations and 12 young migrants of 7 different nationalities, aged between 18 and 29;
  • A Policy Brief for ministries and administrations and non-governmental organisations in contact with young adults and migrants was developed. These recommendations were specifically formulated with the objective of strengthening the acquisition of social capital by young migrants living in Luxembourg. The latter is considered crucial to better understand how the integration of young migrants contributes to fostering social cohesion within Luxembourgish society.

French as a language of integration in 3 acts

Theatrical improvisation is at the heart of our project. It is meant to help use French as a language of integration

    Project title: French as a language of integration in 3 acts

    Project duration: 1 November 2020 to 30 September 2021

    Project description:

    With 25 years of experience, the language school "Inligua" specialises in language training for adults, aimed at the public in the service sector but also at job seekers and applicants and beneficiaries of international protection. Its method is based on a direct, global, progressive and communicative approach, focusing mainly on oral skills and then on listening, reading and writing skills.

  • The project aims to increase the level of French of newcomers, applicants and beneficiaries of international protection by one unit, through a variety of activities involving visual and auditory differentiation exercises, memorization and classification activities, production tasks, role-playing and, above all, theatrical improvisation. Given the specificities of this audience, the pedagogical methodology aims to restrict the use of text, which is omnipresent in traditional learning methods, in favour of other supports such as illustrations, audio recordings, role-plays and improvisations.
  • The project consists of courses that take place in 3 acts (personal life, public life and professional life). The materials used in the courses are, on the one hand, authentic documents and, on the other hand, audio materials that consist of dialogues reproducing a concrete and real pattern of everyday life.
  • In addition to the theatrical improvisations, the project offers the participants monthly outings linked to the lessons covered in the programme.

Project objectives:

  • Forming 2 groups of A1.1 level.
  • Each group will consist of ten people.
  • At the end of the lessons, participants will be able to deal with common situations in their personal, public and professional life.

Target population:

  • The courses are aimed at adult men and women aged between the age of 18 and 55, newcomers, applicants for international protection and beneficiaries of international protection.

Achieved results:

  • Design of a French language programme as an integration language in 3 acts (personal, public and professional life) with authentic documents, audio supports and theatrical improvisation workshops.
  • Organisation of French courses with two different groups, each composed of 10 participants.

    Immigration trends in recent decades have changed the demography in Luxembourg. The aim of this project is to gain a better understanding of the needs of elderly people between the age of 50 and 70, by identifying, among other things, the specific needs of elderly migrants, and to identify current expectations in the context of active ageing. In addition, there is a need for a better understanding of the factors that prevent or facilitate the participation of seniors in active ageing and the access to professionalised services, such as the Senior Club, continuing education for elderly people, etc.

    Project title: Active ageing in Luxembourg (VAL): needs of Luxembourgish and non-Luxembourgish residents and their participation and non-participation in the activities offered by the different services (VAL)

    Project duration: 1 September 2020 to 30 November 2021

    Project description: The "VAL" project is a research project, carried out in close collaboration between the team of the University of Luxembourg and the RBS - Center fir Altersfroen, which wants to study the social participation of elderly people, the integration of non-Luxembourgish people and intergenerationality. In a context, where people aged 60 and more, represent almost 20% of the total population, and one third of the people aged 60 and over are non-Luxembourgers it is essential to continuously re-evaluate the needs, as well as the living conditions of this population. This is a population that not only has strongly increased (a total increase of 67% between 2001 and 2020), but that has surely changed in character due to the immigration trends in recent decades.

    Project objectives:

  • A better understanding of the needs (in the context of active ageing) of the 50-70 year old population, among others, highlighting the specific needs of elderly migrants;
  • A better understanding of the current expectations, in particular with regard to older people, 50+, Luxembourgers and non-Luxembourgers (in the context of the offer of senior clubs and the importance of "active ageing");
  • A better understanding of the facilitators and barriers to participation, as well as the reasons for social isolation, and the sense of belonging (social, cultural and local) to the place of residence of Luxembourgers and non-Luxembourgers, and their cultural and local identification.

    Target population: The project targets Luxembourgish and non-Luxembourgish people over 50 years old, living in Luxembourg.

    Achieved results:

  • This survey allowed for the analysis of the needs of the population aged 50+ by measuring indicators of well-being among people living in Luxembourg and by determining their rate of participation in social activities organised in their municipalities.
  • A survey was conducted among 1000 people living in Luxembourg (foreigners and Luxembourgers). In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted with 39 participants from four selected municipalities (Differdange, Mersch, Ettelbruck and Clervaux).
  • A brochure was produced, with a preface by Mrs Corinne Cahen (Minister of Family Affairs and Integration), on the importance of "networks" in the social integration of older people. In addition to the discussion and presentation of the results, a conceptual framework was developed which can be used as a basis for the development of intercultural competencies in working with older people.

Information survey pathways

    Getting satisfactory and accurate information is important for living and working in a society. For foreigners as well as for the local population. While most public and non-public organisations in Luxembourg currently provide information on their online platforms, our previous studies suggest that this information is not necessarily delivered in a centralised and homogeneous way, or even coherently, with regard to the linguistic and language diversity of Luxembourg

    Project title: Information survey pathways

    Project duration: 1 September 2020 - 31 May 2021

    Project description:
    The aim of this project is to study the current use of online websites in Luxembourg from the point of view of users and providers, to understand the needs of both parties and to provide recommendations, as well as the results of research on best practices in other multilingual countries. In more detail, this project aims to:

  • Research the current state of "information seeking" behaviour of Luxembourgish residents (foreigners and Luxembourgers) as information users.
  • Understanding the motivation, design and actual use of existing online platforms, inter alia of municipalities, administrations and non-governmental organisations as information providers, and to analyse their effectiveness.
  • Collecting and documenting the needs of different users and information providers.
  • Researching best practices in other multilingual countries.
  • Exploring possibilities for improving the platforms' tools.

    Project objectives:                

  • Creation of a "Checklist" for institutions to consider when creating a website.
  • Target population:

    The target population consists of the individuals taking part in the survey (20 men/20 women). These people will be selected by taking into account their nationality, generation, education and economic status.

    Achieved results:

  • This study identifies, on a small scale, the practices of 40 residents of Luxembourg (foreign & local) seeking  access to public information via the internet.
  • By presenting examples of good practices inspired by findings from several multilingual countries, this research highlights factors that help to facilitate the access, improve user navigation and make it easy for people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to seek for and find information.
  • The study provides recommendations and suggestions as well as a checklist for organisations in charge of displaying  information via the internet / websites.

    Being is the great explainer - that's our approach

    Project title: Peanut Project

    Project duration: 1 November 2020 - 31 July 2021

    Project description: According to a study by the European Agency for Fundamental Rights conducted between 2015 and 2016, 40% of the Afro-descendant women surveyed stated that they had been victims of discrimination in employment in the last 5 years. The project consists of the design and organisation of three Master Classes open to all, targeting women from diverse backgrounds who wish to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure. These events will take the form of discussions (talks) and exchanges of experience, by putting forward four women entrepreneurs, two of which operate in Luxembourg. They will share their successes and failures, as well as the lessons learned from their experiences. The aim of each Master Class is to teach participants technical tools and social skills through three topics:

  • 21 November 2020: Confidence and leadership
  • 6 February 2021: Women, power and money
  • 8 May 2021: Reconciling entrepreneurship and family

    Project objectives: The objectives of the three Master classes will be:

  • Learning how to carry out a project and to face the obstacles that women face in terms of external financing difficulties, lack of support or recognition, integration of women in business networks.
  • Giving full information about the services offered by the partners and the benefits of joining one of the proposed pathways.
  • Contributing to a better knowledge of Luxembourg, its assets and its economic potential

    Target population: The Master Classes target women wishing to launch an entrepreneurial project, and more particularly women of diverse backgrounds. Admission will be free upon registration, and places will be limited to a maximum of 50 participants. Collaborations with the Chamber of Commerce, Touchpoints asbl and NYUKO are planned.

    Achieved results:

  • This project brought together women from ethnic minority groups with exceptional entrepreneurial backgrounds to share their personal stories that provide other women with intellectual and practical tools around a particular theme, which enable them to become an entrepreneur in their field of work.
  • 4 women entrepreneurs were able to share their successes, failures and lessons learned during 3 Master Classes open to all and targeting women from diverse backgrounds who wish to embark on an entrepreneurial adventure.
  • At the end of a round table discussion, an overview of the current situation and future prospects was given.

    Through our workshops, we aim to facilitate social and professional inclusion. Arts and crafts force us to look for the right gesture to go towards more fluidity and creation, just like learning a language. Our guiding ideas are multiculturalism, respect for others, collective intelligence, and openness to Luxembourg society, based on the confidence and self-esteem necessary to reach out to others.

    Project duration: 1 November 2020 to 31 July 2021

    Project description: The idea is based on the observation that people with little or no schooling in their mother tongue encounter real difficulties in integration and learning. In order to face these "obstacles", the non-profit organisation “Le Jardin des Possibles” proposes a project aiming at the professional and social integration of REVIS beneficiaries. The "Pierres et Partages" project combines French immersion, creativity, group dynamics and technical achievements, through the activity of enamelled lava stones. For 9 months, the participants in the project will learn about this technique, during workshops conducted exclusively in French and under the watchful eye of an expert trainer. The workshops are open to 20 participants per 3-month cycle, for 4 half-days per week.

    Ultimately, these workshops will give participants the tools to increase their interpersonal skills and thus increase their potential for integration into Luxembourgish society through the following points:

  • Learning through the practice of French.
  •  A boost in self-confidence because of speaking in a group and practising in real situations.
  • At the end of the project, a personal assessment will be drawn up in order to evaluate the progress of each participant and to orientate them towards the continuation of their integration process.

Project objectives:

  • Supervising 60 REVIS beneficiaries in an enamelled lava stones workshop.
  • Improving oral expression in French.
  • Working in a multicultural environment.
  • Enhancing self-esteem and increasing skills.
  • There may be an opportunity to refer some of the participants to prospects of community service (TUC measure) at the end of the project or to orient them towards vocational training.

Target population:

The workshops are open to REVIS beneficiaries from different backgrounds who want to demonstrate a level of French A1.2.

Achieved results:

  • Three sessions of French courses, each lasting 3 to 4 months, were organised.
  • Non-formal learning was based on intensive daily practice of the French language through different themes, always based on the needs of the participants, either for the work done in the workshop or for different real-life contexts.
  • The use of collective intelligence facilitated self-esteem and self-confidence and, by extension, the sense of inclusion that was fostered by the multiculturalism of the teams formed.

Poetry does not have a single language, nor does it stop at borders. Using techniques from non-formal education, the idea is to make this form of expression more accessible and to couple it with a series of varied performances to build inclusive spaces and strong opportunities for shared integration

    Project title: Write4Inclusion - Series of writing workshops and performances on the theme of shared integration

    Project duration: 1 May 2020 - 31 January 2021

    Project description: The project aims to offer a series of writing workshops on the theme of shared inclusion. Over the period of 9 months, the participants will explore poetic writing based on themes from the works of 9 contemporary Luxembourgish poets (chosen and translated by Jean Portante). The works will be chosen to highlight the issues of shared integration and to create a bridge between Luxembourgish culture and the integration experience of those present.

  • In a second phase, in order to enhance the value of the writing work carried out during the workshops, performances will be organised with various audiences and in different regions of the country. The performances will take the form of exchanges between the public and the participants, who will have the opportunity to read/explain their poetic creations to an audience. These performances will be adapted to the health situation and are likely to change.
  • The aim of the project is to allow citizens, amateur artists, to take part in the act of civic participation by getting involved in poetic creation and speaking in the public space alongside Jean Portante, with a view to encouraging a confrontation between the chosen works and the individual and collective experiences of shared integration process in Luxembourg.

    Project objectives

  • One or two public readings will be organised.
  • Organisation and facilitation of 11 workshops on poetic expression.
  • Capitalisation of the project: development of a pedagogical framework allowing the elaboration of a file for use by integration professionals, with a view to reproducing a similar project with their target public, and of a document conceptualising the intervention and implementation of the project.

    Target population: 

  • Between 7 and 16 men and women from various socio-cultural and geographical backgrounds and with at least a B1 level in French, Portuguese or Luxembourgish. These participants will necessarily have a particular interest in the issue of integration and will engage in workshops of poetic expression.
  • Partnerships with the municipalities of Mamer and Esch-sur-Alzette are planned.

Achieved results:

  • Organisation of 11 writing workshops on the theme of shared integration and writing of 35 texts with an average of 5 participants per workshop.
  • Sharing of the written texts via different channels, including: reading at „Festival des migrations, des cultures et de la citoyenneté” and dissemination on the social media of IKL (centre for intercultural education) and Cultur'all asbl.
